Carlos' life mission is to change the lives of young artists and positively impact communities through the making of music. He serves as Orchestra Consultant for Sinfónica UNAB, Aruba Symphony Academy, and Ensamble Jaibana en Medellin. He is also lecturer at the Batuta Foundation, Rice University in Texas, and several universities in Colombia. Carlos is Resident Conductor for the National Youth ensemble of Colombia, Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, leading these talented players each year in their international tour. Carlos has acted as Guest Conductor in the Houston Symphony, Alabama Symphony, Bogota Philharmonic, Cali Philharmonic, UNAB Symphony, Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica Eafit in Medellín, Filarmónica de Medellín, Encuentro de Orquestas Juveniles Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, and the EMU and MSU Symphonic and Opera programs.
Born in the city of Medellín, Colombia, Carlos obtained his High-School Diploma in Arts at the Instituto Musical Diego Echavarría in the same city, graduating with honors. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Music with honors in viola performance at Universidad EAFIT in Medellín, a Master of Music degree from the Escuela Soto-Mesa in Madrid, Spain, the summer program of the Basel Academy in Switzerland, and a second Master of Music- Viola Performance degree from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. His musical education completed its cycle by being admitted into the prestigious Doctoral program in Orchestral Conducting at Michigan State University in 2008.
He has been adjunct faculty for theory, viola and orchestra in the IMDE, Universidad Eafit, the Foundation for Youth Orchestras in Venezuela (Fesnojiv), Escuela Soto Mesa in Madrid and Detroit Symphony Orchestra and its Civic Orchestra in Detroit, Michigan. Carlos received honors scholarships during his High-school, College, and Graduate studies, along with the government Concejo de Medellín scholarship for outstanding performance in the national academic tests (ICFES), the Scholarship for Latin American Musicians sponsored by Fundación Carolina and Escuela Reina Sofíathat allowed him to begin his artist diploma studies in Madrid, the Carolina Oramas Scholarship for musicians sponsored by Colombian Government Institute for Superior Education and the Scholarship Program of COLFUTURO Foundation.
Carlos is currently the Musical Ambassador and Assistant Conductor of the Houston Symphony, Co-Host on both its Musically Speaking Concert Series and On the Music podcast. He is also the main conductor of the Aruba Symphony Orchestra and leads the team of researchers that delve into the Colombian Symphonic Music with the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia. During the summer, Carlos will lead the Orchestral Academy programs of the San Antonio chamber orchestra in Texas and the American Voices Foundation in Beirut, Lebanon, conduct the twentieth anniversary concert of the Universidad Eafit in Medellín, Colombia, and prepare the Sphinx Virtuoso for their annual National Tour in the United States.
